Fragrance has been one of my favorite categories in beauty since my mom bought me Tommy Girl in 1998. I never left the house without two spritzes: one on my wrist and one in my hair. But what would my younger self think about the new trend of solid perfume? I think she’d be ecstatic. A pocket-sized treasure she could apply at school between classes and show off to her friends? Yes please. But, this new wave of solid fragrance isn’t reserved for the younger set. It’s the new chic accessory for people of all ages.

Aside from the obvious fact that solid perfumes are in fact solid, they are different for a few reasons. “They are typically alcohol-free, made with a blend of waxes and/or oils and offer a different application experience,” says Jenine Guerriero, head of marketing and consumer insights, North America, for Givaudan, a leading fragrance manufacturer. “You apply them directly to your pulse points, including your wrists, neck and behind the ears, where the warmth of your skin helps to diffuse the scent.” Additionally, most solid perfumes are refillable, which adds an eco-friendly component as well.

Does Solid Perfume Last Longer?

Depending on the formulation, Guerriero says solid perfumes can last longer. “They tend to have a high fragrance concentration, evaporate slowly and linger on the skin for hours. In addition, we are also seeing the trend of layering different solid perfumes, which can lead to an even more beautifully intense fragrance experience.”

Why Is Solid Perfume Trending?

Like K-beauty‘s influence on skin care, solid perfumes have been a big trend in Asia as of late, and the U.S. is next. “The telltale sign of growing consumer interest is the growth in search volume,” says Guerriero. “Data from Spate—Google Trend and TikTok Data—shows the highest Google search volume for the past 12 months for solid perfume volume is from South Korea. This region has also experienced quarter-over-quarter growth of 299 percent. Japan has also experienced 376-percent growth in the same time frame. In the United States, TikTok searches for solid perfume over the last month are up 621 percent!”

Guerriero points to other reasons why solid perfumes are trending as well. “Driving the trend is also their appeal as personal, indulgent luxuries. They are portable and convenient, yet crafted with premium quality. Emerging and established brands are responding to consumer demand with unique, high-performing scents presented in elegant, sustainable packaging, combining practicality with sophistication. Solid perfumes create dimensions of luxury with their ultra-smooth formulas, which can now offer so much: cool, warm or release a burst of scent through touch. They can even transform from powder to oil upon skin contact. These are the new multi-sensory, transformative experiences that can make a fragrance extra special.”

Of course, social media also plays a role. “Influencers are influencing and making consumers even more curious!” says Guerriero. “We also see confirmation of consumer interest in personalization and scent discovery. They are seeking out DIY and solid perfume recipes online and on TikTok. They are feeling empowered to create their own versions of scents to reflect their personal identities. Scent is a way to enhance personal identity, and solid perfumes allow for a very personal expression of self. Applied with intention, they can be layered or mixed to create unique scent combinations that reflect individual styles. Designed to be experienced for oneself first, and enjoyed by others after being invited into close proximity.”

Our Favorite Solid Perfumes to Try

Though they aren’t available in the U.S. until January, these solid stick perfumes have been getting a lot of attention in Asia. Poised to be the must-have accessory of the season at launch, they feature lipstick-like, refillable packaging that’s adorned with the brand’s famous houndstooth pattern. The formula is alcohol-free and highly concentrated, and you can choose from three Miss Dior scents: Miss Dior Mini Miss Blooming Bouquet ($72), Miss Dior Mini Miss Eau de Parfum ($85) or Miss Dior Mini Miss Parfum ($94). There will also be limited-edition cases launched each year, inspired by the runway.

“My favorite solid fragrances are those that offer an innovative textural experience, like these,” says Guerriero. “They have a beautiful, jelly-like, velvety texture. This is where a deep connection can happen with a fragrance, and solids are paving a new way. It is the power of scent combined with the power of touch.”

A couple months ago, RiRi launched a solid balm version of her best-selling spicy-floral perfume, and we were pumped. The formula is alcohol-free and has nice lasting power, especially when your skin emits heat. Plus, we’ve never seen a compact design like this one: There is actually a fun little maze game on the top that’s great for people who fidget.

One of the brand’s best-selling scents in solid form, this fragrance is housed in a luxurious, refillable black metal case. The embossed diptyque logo and swan art make it feel special, like a little treasure you’ll want to keep in your bag always. The unique scent, anchored by rose and blackcurrant, is long-lasting and beautiful on the skin.

“I also love products that story-tell through their texture—products that draw inspiration from cultural rituals and ignite our curiosity for discovery,” says Guerriero. “They turn the act of application into a sensory playground, enriching both our connection to the scent and the story it tells. Each Diptyque solid perfume encapsulates a unique story or memory. Housed in elegant, refillable cases, their ritualistic application encourages mindfulness and personal expression, making each use a meaningful experience.”

This solid fragrance duo was practically made for social media (the TikTok universe loves it). You get two of the brand’s best-selling scents (warm-floral Love Club and vanilla-forward Unmute) in solid form to layer to your heart’s content. Plus, you don’t have to touch the balms with your fingers. Just glide them onto your skin (and refill them when they’re empty).

“NOYZ is another brand that offers a modern twist on traditional scent rituals, emphasizing personal expression and convenience,” says Guerriero. “Its refillable, bullet-shaped containers are portable and allow for easy scent layering.”

This adorable, pocket-size perfume is both ergonomically pleasing and refillable. The brand says its solid formula is “softer and more intimate” than the original creamy, warm EDP with an alcohol-free, anhydrous wax base.
