Top 10 things to do in Malta for couples: what not to miss
Valletta
The capital city of Malta, Valletta, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site absolutely brimming with history, culture, and old-fashioned charm.
Founded by the Knights of St. John, this city is a treasure trove of architecture, museums and a vibrant restaurant and bar scene.
Highlights include St. John’s Co-Cathedral with its stunning interior and the beautiful Upper Barrakka Gardens, with spectacular views of the Grand Harbour.
Wandering the historic and cute streets of Valletta is one of my favourite things to do in Malta in a couple.
Pro tip: head over to the Three Cities from Valletta on a traditional boat, this is a truly romantic trip and offers incredible views back over the historic cityscape.
Gozo

Malta’s sister island, Gozo, is a tranquil and haven, perfect for couples’ holidays. It’s our favourite place to go when visiting Malta.
You can spend days walking across its scenic landscapes, historical sites, and getting used to the rhythm of a more relaxed pace of life. The gorgeous pink and gold sunsets offer a romantic end to each day on Gozo.
Gozo is perfect for couples seeking adventure, with excellent opportunities for diving, hiking, cycling and water sports. Experiencing these activities together can help you share a real sense of fun and accomplishment with your partner.
If you only have one day to spend in Gozo, it’s still worth visiting.
Don’t miss the capital, Victoria, with its impressive Citadel offering plenty of history and idyllic views of the island.
For a unique adventure, explore Gozo by Quad bike.
Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon on Comino Island is a slice of paradise with its crystal-clear turquoise waters and stunning beauty. Perfect for swimming, snorkelling, and soaking up the sun, this spot is a must-visit on any couple’s trip to Malta.
The lagoon’s vibrant colour means it’s very busy and can be a bit overwhelming. But it’s worth it for a swim in the gorgeous sea.
A boat trip to the Blue Lagoon is a great way to get breathtaking views of the coastline and the opportunity to explore hidden coves and sea caves, making it an unforgettable experience.
Mdina

Known as the ‘Silent City, Mdina is the former capital of Malta. It’s a peaceful fortified city where you can stroll quiet streets amongst the yellow stone buildings.
Pose for your couple’s Instagram photos at the Mdina Gate and don’t miss a trip to the romantic Fontanella Tea Garden.
The Blue Grotto
One of the best things to do in Malta is a boat trip to the Blue Grotto. Jump into a small boat and be entertained by the captain’s stories about how the caves got their names.
The water here is a stunning shade of sparkling blue, making it a wonderful backdrop to a romantic adventure together.
St Peter’s Pool

One of Malta’s most stunning natural swimming spots is St Peter’s Pool. Known for its crystal-clear waters and striking rock formations, where locals can be seen diving off from.
Located near the village of Marsaxlokk, this inlet offers perfect conditions for relaxing on the rocks and taking a dip.
Pro tip: for a more intimate experience, with less crowds, visit nearby Il-Kalanka beach. Just a short distance south from St Peter’s Pool, it has equally beautiful waters and scenery but with a more peaceful and secluded atmosphere.
Mosta Dome

For culture loving couples, the Mosta Dome, also known as the Mosta Rotunda, is a highlight of any trip to Malta. This stunning church boasts one of the largest unsupported domes in the world. The interior decoration is a sight to behold.
We found the history of the church fascinating. It’s famous for an incredible event during World War II when a bomb pierced the dome but did not explode and none of the congregation underneath was hurt.
Have an adventure together

If you’re an adventure seeking couple, Malta offers a variety of exciting activities. From jet-skiing to rock climbing and quad biking to diving, there’s plenty of adrenalin-fuelled activities to keep you entertained and working together as a team.
For couples that dive
Malta is a top destination for divers. The Blue Hole in Gozo is a a renowned diving spot with underwater caves, arches, and marine life. Whether you’re seasoned divers or beginners, the clear waters and underwater landscapes of Malta and Gozo are sure to impress.
The range of fun activities you can do on Malta is just one of the reasons it’s a great holiday destination for couples.
During our trips to Malta, we’ve kayaked around the coast, rented a couple’s jet-ski, mountain biked and learnt to SUP together. Getting through the challenges of each activity was a great way to connect as a couple.
Head out for a hike

Malta’s rugged landscape and coastal paths provide excellent opportunities for hikers. We’ve hiked all over Gozo and recommend exploring as much of the island by foot as you can for a romantic slow travel experience.
The Dingli Cliffs offer some of the most spectacular views in Malta. They’re the highest point on the island, and walking here provides you with the calming influence of the natural habitat of Malta. This area is perfect for a relaxing hike and picnic whilst taking in the beauty of your surroundings.
We also enjoyed hiking part of the less well-known route of the Victoria Lines, sometimes referred to as the ‘Great Wall of Malta.’ This historical fortification stretches out across the island and navigating the route together provides a unique hiking experience where you get a sense of Malta’s rich history.
For a coastal hike on Gozo, don’t miss the Sanap Cliffs. This breathtaking trail takes you along awesome, hair-raising cliffs to Xlendi Grotto at Xlendi Bay. The clear, blue waters are perfect for a refreshing swim together after your hike.
Go to the beach

Many people ask does Malta have good beaches? I’m pleased to say that the beaches on Malta are wonderful.
A visit to Malta means you get to choose from a whole range of brilliant beaches, to suit every taste.
During our visits, we’ve been blown away by the beauty of the Blue Lagoon on Comino Island. The turquoise waters are just so inviting. A boat trip to the island is an adventure in itself, offering breathtaking views of the Maltese coastline.
Golden Bay on Malta and Ramla Bay on Gozo are favourites for sand seekers. With soft golden sands, they’re ideal spots for beach-loving couples. Theses beaches have a range of amenities, including cafes and ice cream vans.
Mellieha Bay, Malta’s largest sandy beach, is popular for a relaxed day by the sea. However, it’s not my favourite, as I think there are far more beautiful beaches on Gozo and Malta.
For a more secluded experience, head to Wied il-Ghasri on Gozo. It’s a small inlet, perfect for floating around in.
Take a day trip
There are lots of options for day trips on Malta. You can even visit Sicily for the day, so you can combine a trip to Malta with a hop over to Italy, for added romantic value. Here are three highly rated day trips:
