Reigning world under 20 800m bronze medalist Sylvia Chelangat and Damaris Mutunga and Elkanah Kiprotich Chemelil qualified to compete 400m semifinals at the ongoing World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Cali, Colombia.
In women, Chelangat and Mutunga will fly the Kenyan flag while men’s sole representative Chemelil will be in semifinal action set for Thursday.
Chelangat finished second in heat four in 53.99 behind Jamaica’s Dejanea Oakley (53.70), Nigeria’s Queen Usunobun in 54.32.
Mutunga was second in heat one after clocking 52.60 behind India’s Rupal (52.50) and Salma Lehlali of Morocco was in third in 54.14.
Last year, Chelangat won bronze in the two lap race in 52.23 behind Nigeria’s Imaobong Nse Uko (51.55) and Poland’s Kornelia Lesiewicz (51.97) settled for silver
Chemelil finished fourth in the second heat clocking 46.69 in a race won by South Africa’s Lythe Pillay in 46.02, ahead of Yusuf Ali Abbas from Bahrain (46.21) and Jamaica’s Delano Kennedy (46.24)
Last year, Chemelil reached the semis of the competition held at Kasarani.
