The complete list of nominees for the 97th Academy Awards, the most prestigious award in Hollywood, have been announced today (from Oscars.org). The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the nominees via live broadcast. The nominations from 2024 are, as expected, an intriguing and impressive collection of some of the best movies of the year. The big musical Emilia Perez from Netflix ended up with the most nominations at 13 total. The Brutalist and Wicked were next with 10 noms each. Beyond these, a number of other movies were either excluded or included in unexpected ways. Brazil’s film I’m Still Here (view the trailer) earned many nominations, along with The Substance and A Complete Unknown. Luckily Dune: Part Two showed up in a a few categories as well, even though many thought it would be forgotten. The Academy chose a total of ten Best Picture nominees for 2024, including: Anora, Conclave, Nickel Boys (yay!), Wicked, and The Brutalist (my #1). Without further ado, view the full list of 2024 nominees below.

Congratulations to all of this year’s nominees. I’m happy about many of these films getting nominated – The Brutalist is my #1 of 2024 and I’m so glad it impressed Academy voters as much as it impressed me. I also adore A Complete Unknown and that one snuck in a bunch of acting nominations, including Edward Norton and Monica Barbaro – both of whom I specifically talked about in a mini-review after my second viewing. I am most disappointed that Nickel Boys didn’t end up with a Best Cinematography nom – it really deserved that nod in addition to Best Picture. And I’m also sad that Saoirse Ronan in The Outrun didn’t make the cut for Best Actress. She really should be in there (I’d swap her for Fernanda Torres). In the other sections, I’m delighted to see Gints Zilbalodis’ animation sensation Flow getting a number of nominations, and I’m also very happy about Dune: Part Two sneaking in with a bunch of nominations in the end. It’s exciting to see these kind of surprises. I am sure there will be tons of complaints about everything, as is the norm, but I believe this year’s picks are pretty good for the most part. What do you think of these Oscar noms for 2024?
