Let’s talk hibiscus. Yes, it’s a super Instagrammable flower that screams summer vibes, but there’s more to it than that. Hibiscus sabdariffa flower has been used for natural skincare for AGES.

You can soak in the benefits of the hibiscus plant in a few ways, but one of the best ways to get it is through hibiscus tea. This delicious herbal tea isn’t just refreshing and seriously delicious; it’s packed with noticeable skin benefits. WIN WIN.

Today, we’re breaking down how hibiscus tea can take your skincare routine up a notch. Whether you’re sipping it hot or iced, hibiscus tea has some AMAZING beauty benefits that’ll have you glowing in no time.

HOT TIP: if you like it iced, throw in a scoop of Beauty Water to replenish electrolytes, plump hair, skin and nails, and renew every cell in your body.

Let’s get into those benefits of hibiscus for skin:

10 Benefits Of Hibiscus Tea For Skin

    Boosts Collagen Production

Hibiscus tea is rich in vitamin C, which is the essential vitamin for collagen production. Remember: collagen is what keeps your skin looking plump, youthful, and absolutely radiant. By sipping on hibiscus tea, you’re helping your body produce more collagen naturally, which helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles and delivers that perfect dewy glow.

    Helps Retain Moisture

Speaking of that dewy glow, one of the most important factors for healthy, radiant skin is retaining moisture. Hibiscus tea helps your skin retain moisture thanks to its hydrating properties. It’s rich in antioxidants that keep your skin barrier healthy, preventing dry flaky skin from ruining your makeup and beauty game. Moist skin is step one to any great look.

    Exfoliates Dead Skin Cells

Hibiscus contains natural alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), which are gentle yet effective exfoliants. These AHAs work to remove dead skin cells, revealing the fresher, smoother layer of skin beneath and, no, you don’t have to scrub your face with it. Drinking the hibiscus tea can assist with the regeneration process from the inside out to keep your skin’s texture smooth as silk. The newer your skin cells, the fresher and younger your skin looks.

    Brightens Skin Tone

We were just talking about the benefits of exfoliation, but we’ve got more. It’s not just good for skin texture, but great for skin tone as well. It can make your skin tone brighter and more even for the PERFECT complexion. This part is essential for that lit-from-within glow you’re looking for.

Benefits Of Hibiscus Tea For Skin

    Fights Free Radicals

Packed with antioxidants, hibiscus tea helps to combat free radicals, which are responsible for premature aging and damage to skin cells. Antioxidants work as your skin’s defense and reduce oxidative stress to keep it looking youthful. Less oxidative stress = fewer wrinkles. We’re all about that.

    Reduces Inflammation

When we’re talking about skin health, there is more to it than no wrinkles or dryness. If you’re dealing with inflammation, you could be struggling with redness, breakouts, and irritation that could be killing your beauty game. Luckily, hibiscus tea is loaded with anti-inflammatory properties that calm and clear up your skin, so it’s looking and feeling its best.

    Helps With Acne

Thanks to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, hibiscus tea can be a great addition to your skincare routine if you’re dealing with breakouts. As mentioned, the tea works to reduce the inflammation that causes acne. But, inflammation reduction also prevents future breakouts, keeping your skin clear and healthy. If you’re dealing with acne, Bryony Deery swears by ice rolling with our Mint Roller or ice roller because it closes her pores.

Regulates Blood Pressure (which affects skin)

Did you know that high blood pressure can cause stress on your skin? That means there’s not much oxygen and nutrients getting to your skin cells to keep them looking fresh. Hibiscus tea is known to help regulate blood pressure, promoting healthier circulation and better oxygenation for your skin for all your beauty goals. The more oxygen your skin receives, the better it’ll look and feel.

    Detoxes the Skin

Hibiscus tea is known for its detoxifying properties, helping to flush out toxins that may build up in the skin. (Ice rolling can help with that too.) You can support your liver and kidneys by drinking hibiscus tea and that can help keep your body free of toxins and other harmful junk. Detoxifying is key to getting that natural dewy glow.

    How To Make Hibiscus Tea

Here’s how to make a delicious cup of hibiscus tea and get all these skin benefits at home:

    Step 1: Boil water.

Start by boiling fresh water. For a single serving, about 8-10 oz of water will do the trick.

(Here is Lauryn’s favorite kettle. Use code SKINNY for 10% off.)

    Step 2: Add hibiscus flowers.

Once your water is boiling, put 1-2 tablespoons of dried hibiscus flowers into a tea infuser. Then, place that infuser into a mug, tea pot, or other vessel. You could get tea bags too to make it super simple. Just be sure you’re getting a brand that is clean, and doesn’t leach microplastics into your tea.

    Step 3: Let it steep.

Let the hibiscus flowers steep in the hot water for 5-10 minutes. The longer you let it steep, the stronger the flavor and the more antioxidants you’ll get. (But, after a while it’ll get bitter, so don’t go too crazy.) Once you’re done, remove the infuser.

    Step 4: Add sweetener.

You can sweeten it with honey or whatever your sweetener of choice is. Hibiscus tea has a naturally tangy, tart flavor that’s pretty refreshing on its own, so you can also totally go without added sweeteners. This is why it’s one of our favorite teas to keep in a pitcher in the fridge to enjoy iced.

Step 5: Enjoy hot or iced.

Hibiscus tea is delicious both hot and iced. For an iced version, let the tea cool naturally then add it to your a pitcher, then the fridge. For hot tea, just drink it straight from the mug.

Bonus tip: Add a slice of lemon for extra flavor and some added skin benefits from the vitamin C.
